Light Up Blue
On April 2nd, 2021 everyone in my family will wear blue. No, it’s definitely not because I am so organized that I plan outfits that far in advance. We will wear blue to bring awareness. To help our son’s diagnosis be seen, to better help others understand and hopefully begin to ask questions. April 2nd, 2021 is Autism Awareness Day.
Though we don’t wear the color blue daily and we don’t own any clothes that read “our son has an autism diagnosis,” we strive to glorify our Lord who makes everything perfect. We look for ways to help others learn to accept those who may not look, act, or show love the same way we do. Jesus said it best when He said, “‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:31 NIV).
There are so many examples of Jesus spending time with people who were different from Him. Many of whom had special needs. Its ok if you don’t know what to do or say. A simple smile of acknowledgment or a wave will do just fine. Someone I know said it best when he said, “If you’re late to the party (let’s call it the inclusion party!), that’s fine; as long as you’re willing to learn, someone is willing to teach you.”
On April 2nd, 2021, I will wear blue. I will wear blue because I have an amazing son who happens to have an autism diagnosis. Friend, I ask you to do two things: wear some blue on April 2nd and put into practice the teachings of our savior: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
You guys are awesome, I mean it!
